Phoenix Primary School ‘Where We Rise to the Challenge’

Autumn 1

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back! We hope you had a fantastic summer break and had the opportunity to recharge your batteries, ready for a fun-filled year.

Maths

This half term we will be focussing on our number and calculation skills. We will be developing our fluency with numbers through lots of counting. We will also be extending our addition and subtraction skills by beginning to move away from the use of concrete resources and be able to solve problems mentally. Please support at home by practising with your child their 2, 5 and 10 times tables.

English

We will be spending this half term studying the text The BFG. We have lots of writing opportunities planned as we fully immerse ourselves into the text. We are looking forward to diving straight into the story and unpicking the characters and setting. We will also be looking closely at the language used by the BFG and teaching him how to speak correct standard English.

Theme

Our topic this half term is all things Liverpool! We will be exploring our beautiful city and using cross curricular links to find out more. We will be using Computing to research about famous landmarks and people, such as the Beatles. We will also take a close look at the artist Sir Peter Blake and his close link with Liverpool through his design of the Sgt Pepper Album Cover and Razzle Dazzle boats which have been spotted in the River Mersey. We are very excited for our upcoming trip, visit our Twitter page to find out more @yeartwophoenix.

Science and R.E.

Mrs Evans will teach both these subjects this half term as we look at Animals and Humans in Science and 'Beliefs' in R.E.

Please ensure that you are reading with your child each night and make a note of this in their reading record. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at school.

Thank you for your continued support,

Miss Morris, Mrs Bentley and Mrs Evans
