Phoenix Primary School ‘Where We Rise to the Challenge’

Autumn 2

Dear Parents/Carers,

We hope you had a restful half term and are looking forward to the upcoming events in school.

Maths

This half term we are continuing to develop our number fluency and calculation skills. We will be furthering our understanding of multiplication and division by using reasoning, explanations and problem solving. We will be learning different techniques to help us solve these problems such as grouping, using a number line and through the use of resources. We love using Numicon as a visual representation.

English

We will be using Talk 4 Writing this half term and will be studying different non-fiction text types. We will be using the skills of Talk 4 Writing to improve and develop our work. We will be writing instruction, information texts and letters over the course of 8 weeks so please support your child at home when they bring their Talk 4 Writing map home to learn.

Theme

Our thematic topic this half term is The Great Fire of London. We are so excited to learn about the great disaster and the effect it had on the city of London. We will be doing a lot of investigatory work into this, looking at eyewitness accounts, considering the residents thoughts and feelings at the time and we will also be comparing this disaster to a more recent disaster-the Grenfall Tower. Visit our Twitter page to find out more @yeartwophoenix.

Science and R.E.

Mrs Evans will teach both these subjects this half term as we look at Materials in Science and continue to look at 'Beliefs' in R.E.

Please ensure that you are reading with your child each night and make a note of this in their reading record. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at school. As you are aware, national expectations have risen for our children so it is very important that your child is supported at home with any additional homework they are given.

We would also encourage the support of counting activities at home with your child. I have included some websites below that will support your child's number fluency.

Thank you for your continued support,

Miss Morris, Mrs Bentley and Mrs Evans
