Phoenix Primary School ‘Where We Rise to the Challenge’

Year 3

Welcome to Year 3

Autumn Term 1

Welcome to year three at Phoenix! Miss Cusack, Miss Scully and Mrs Williams are looking forward to a fabulous and fun-filled year!

.....................................................................................................................................

English

We are using “This Morning I Met a Whale”, by Michael Murpurgo, as the foundation for our learning this half term. This is a beautiful book, that will also be used as inspiration for art work this term.

We will be working hard to improve our handwriting, spelling and grammar. We will be applying these skills across all subjects

What you can do at home

Listen to your child read every night. Remember to write pages read in their Reading Journal. This is so important. We will change books regularly!

Encourage your child to read a range of books, including fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Equally as important, encourage your child to read newspapers to develop their understanding of writing styles.

Maths

The children will be revising mathematical processes: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We will explore strategies required to reason our work and to estimate and check answers.

Additionally, we will continue to develop cross-curricular maths and Everyday Maths.

We will use Lumio to work though areas of maths using IT.

What you can do at home

Continue to help your child to learn their times tables. Times table facts are often a problem for children so any practice is extremely valuable. Always draw your child’s attention to the clock and telling the time as this is a very valuable skill and will help them, not only in maths lessons but also in everyday tasks. Make sure your child is familiar with money and is provided with opportunities to handle it on a day-to-day basis.

Theme.

We will be looking at life in the Stone Age, through to the Iron Age and the influence this period has had on our lives.

We will look at changes in historical and geographical aspects over the years, including developments in building, weaponry, mechanical advances and travel.

..........................................................................................................................................................................................

Science

We will be looking at how we can keep healthy and look after our bodies. We will look at the differences in human and other animal skeletons and muscles. Additionally, we will explore diets and lifestyle, answering the question, “How can Usain Bolt run so quickly?”

Thank you for your continued support. This is a very busy term, with lots of activities.

We look forward to meeting you on parents afternoon..

Miss Cusack, Miss Scully and Mrs Williams.
