Phoenix Primary School ‘Where We Rise to the Challenge’

Class Text

Summer 1

Spring 2

This half term we will be exploring my favourite text, Giraffes Can’t Dance by Giles Andreae.

Giraffes Can’t Dance is a fabulous poem, about a poor giraffe who is mocked by his jungle peers for being unable to dance. There will be lots of incidental writing opportunities this half term, so please remind your child about capital letters, full stops and finger spaces in our sentences.

Spring 1

This half term will be using the text Handa's Surprise by Eileen Browne, learning about other cultures and comparing them with our own.

Autumn 2

This half term we will continue to use Rang-Tan In My Bedroom in our English lessons. We will be using this text to create a letter for our parents, explaining the importance of using sustainable palm oil.

We will also be exploring the text Stickman by Julia Donaldson.

Autumn 1

This half term, our texts will be a whole school approach. 'The Wonder Garden and 'There's a Rang-Tan in my bedroom'.

The Wonder Garden is a beautifully illustrated book which allows its readers to 'wander through five habitats to discover eighty amazing animals.

The book entices children and adults alike through the golden gates on the cover and into the wondrous garden that is planet Earth.  From deserts, rainforests and mountains to oceans we are met by double spread after double spread of richly illustrated landscapes and beautifully drawn creatures.

In Year 1 we will be specifically looking at the Great Barrier Reef.

'There's a Rang-Tan in my bedroom' will raise children's consciousness about conservation and will link with our Chester Zoo project.
