What Your Child Is Learning

Letter for Spring One

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Thank you for your support with your child’s education during Autumn Term. All of the children have applied themselves to the best of their ability this term, and all made wonderful progress. It would not be possible without your help and support. In this letter I will outline what we will be learning during the Spring Term.

English

The children will be studying the novel: ‘The Arrival’ by Shaun Tan during the first three weeks of the term with Mr Godfrey. It’s a wordless novel that focuses the children on their inference skills and provides a fantastic stimulus for writing flashbacks. The children will then begin to start studying the Novel: ‘Oranges in no man’s land’ by Elizabeth Laird, a Novel set in Beriut during the civil war. We will use our book based approach for this covering many genres such as Non-Chronological reports, persuasive texts and narratives

.

Maths

This term the class will be continuing to develop their understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages. Using skills learnt they will begin to solve problems and reason. The children will be introduce to new topics ratio and proportion and algebra. Alongside this we will continue to problem solve and reason using all four operations. If your child is still struggling to learn their times tables, please continue to practise these at home using times tables rock stars. Your hard work is starting to show in their learning.

Thematic

This half term we will continuing with a study of World War 2 Two, focusing this term on the impact it has had on our local environment. We will then begin our of European topics : applying geography skills from our Rainforest unit, while learning about the changes in human and physical geography within another continent

Science

In our science topic, we will be looking at the topic of evolution and inheritance discovering how life changes over time and the impact this has upon our modern life, in the world of animals and humans.

Art and Design

After creating a board game before Christmas we will be focussing art, and specifically pop art, with our focus artist being Andy Warhol, discovering his impact on modern art.

R.E

This half term the children, will be investigating what makes a good leader, and how these characteristics are used to inspire followers of religion through their sacred texts.

Thank you for support as always. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to speak to any of the Year 6 team.

Many Thanks

Mr Gobey, Mr Godfrey and Miss Cusack
