Phoenix Primary School ‘Where We Rise to the Challenge’

Class Text

Autumn 2

In English this half term we will be reading two brilliant texts, ‘Stick Man’ and ‘The Gruffalo’ both by the fabulous Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. Through these texts, the children will continue to develop their writing skills through directed activities focusing on setting descriptions, character descriptions and letter writing as well as through continuous provision.   Please continue to support your child at home by asking them questions about the text and getting them to talk, talk, talk about it!

Our story time texts for this half term are 'Cops and Robbers' by Janet and Allan Ahlberg and 'The Tiger who came to tea' by Judith Kerr.'

Autumn 1

This half term, Phoenix Primary will start by exploring the text, 'The Wonder Garden' with each class investigating a different part of the world. The Wonder Garden is a beautifully illustrated book which allows its readers to 'wander through five habitats to discover eighty amazing animals.'

The book entices children and adults alike through the golden gates on the cover and into the wondrous garden that is planet Earth.  From deserts, rainforests and mountains to oceans we are met by double spread after double spread of richly illustrated landscapes and beautifully drawn creatures.

In Year 1, we will be focusing on 'The Great Barrier Reef.'

After studying the Wonder Garden, we will move onto 'We're going on a bear hunt' which links nicely with our theme topic of Maps and fieldwork. Through this text, the children will develop their writing skills through lots of writing opportunities focusing on poetry, setting descriptions and stories with familiar settings.

Our story time texts for this half term are 'King of the Classroom' by Derick Barnes and 'Numenia and the Hurricane' by Fiona Halliday.
